Remediated Teaching Philosophy
For a digital literacy class we were all challenged to remediate our teaching philosophies. In trying to think about what makes me unique as a teacher, I started reflecting on my favorite unit in which I use Jon Stewart's "Rally to Restore Fear and/or Sanity" to teach rhetoric. It was a ploy I developed as a teaching demonstration on audience. I used the opening lines of three different newspapers's coverage of the rally. In those openings, it becomes clear how each newspaper is creating a different meaning of what the rally meant. This demonstration developed into a full lesson plan that covers in-class discussion of the full articles, a comparison to Jon Stewart's speech to explain what he intended the rally to mean, and then a follow-up in which students write their own papers comparing how one event is given different meaning by different rhetorician. The lesson reflects my style of teaching ploy development which I incorporate technology, pop culture, and complex academic theories in order to help students develop their own meaning surrounding the concept.
